Gourmet Hot Dog

I have a weakness for a good hot dog, a hot dog craving can be extreme and the only way to cure it is by making/eating the best one ever. The trick is using the best ingredients, especially the sausage! I went to the home of amazing hot dogs in Germany and it was a dream come true! I only buy Frankfurter hot dogs from Fournos bakery. If you don’t eat pork, buy good quality beef/chicken hot dogs.


1 packet of good quality Frankfurter hot dogs
Iceberg lettuce
4 tbsp French mayonnaise
Chilli jam

For the tomato relish:

1 tin of chopped Italian tomatoes
1 large squeeze of tomato sauce
1 tsp sugar
1 red onion, chopped
3 garlic cloves, crushed
1 red bell pepper, chopped
1/2 tsp dried oregano
1 tsp dried chilli flakes
1 squeeze of balsamic creme or reduction

Serves 2-4
Preparation: 5 minutes
Cooking time: 40 minutes

Boil the kettle, pre-heat the oven to 150°C. 

To make the tomato relish:

Using a food processor with the blade attachment, chop up the onions, peppers and garlic. Place a saucepan on high-heat with a large lug of olive oil. Once the oil is heated, add the chopped ingredients with the spices. Fry for 7 minutes, then add the tomato paste and sugar. Fry for 1 minute.

Add the tin tomato and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Once the sauce has reduced add the balsamic.

Place the baguette in the oven until warm, make sure it doesn’t turn rock hard.

Boil the hot dogs on the stove, follow the instructions on the packet, it usually takes 3 minutes. 

Place the mayo in a bowl and mix with the chilli jam, add as much as you like, I like it hot.  Cut the baguette into 3 or 4 equal halves.

To serve, spoon a generous amount of relish onto the baguettes, top with some lettuce. I usually cut the Frankfurter in half so it’s easier to eat. Then squeeze over the chilli jam mayo.
